“Open source” FACEPALM

This is MUCH better than the standard Celtx desktop I’ve used over the years, but still has major issues because of Celtx’s family of programs. I like the concept of open source. I also have no problem paying a premium for top notch software. Celtx has tried to be both, and it isn’t working out so well. MOST IMPORTANTLY: The scripts generated in this are NOT compatible with other celtx software. It is extremely frustrating if you use more than one machine (let’s say, a computer at home, at the office, and roaving macbook). I teach screenwriting at a local University, and this issue (combined with how hard it is to get a PDF out of any Celtx software because they require logins and internet connections) makes getting my students scripts very hard. I would like to point out it didn’t used to be this way: Celtx was great! But it’s being dominated by a desire to make money and shove “pre-production tools” down our throats. I shouldnt have to jump hoops just to save my work or create a PDF. All the cloud stuff and IOS compatibility SOUNDS great, but in reality, leads to lost drafts, which is entirely unacceptable. Working on something on my phone or iPad has lost major revisions. Sure, you can go to the site and track down the many versions you have, but that is FRUSTRATING, and gets between you and your writing. There is some great ideas here, but the lack of real world compatibilty accross “celtx” is making Final Draft look really good. Where’s the simple program I loved to write with?

Terrible

Doesnt save. You read that right. It didnt save even though I was hitting Apple-S repeatedly. I lost 50 pages and 8 hours of work because of this. Scene numbers were all messed up. If I turned them off, some would stay. On a few pages, I would get random repeat scene numbers added in werent correct and would never go away. It seemed like it was going to be useable, despite its many foilbles, but not saving makes it worthless. A complete waste of money.

never use it!!!!

OMG! I save the file and checked the next day. Nothing was left!!!!!!! Never use it!!!!!

Beware

Celtx is doing it’s best to get everybody on to a montly subscription. You can only save your applicaiton out as a pdf - unless you subscribe for thier online app - so they are basically holding your scripts to ransome. Thanks Celtx.

Something is wrong

I have used Celtx for years on PC and iOS, and I purchased this version for my MacBook thinking it would be as good as the others. It doesn’t work for sh.. It starts with a 5x8 inch paper format no matter how much I tweak the settings, the formatting is all wrong, and when opening my old screeplays they’re all screwed up. I went to the Celtx website and downloaded the trial version. It is brilliant - works exactly like it’s supposed to, opens old screenplays, formats the pages correctly, and so on. I don’t get it. Something is wrong with the current version in the App store (early March 2014). I do hope they will fix it, before my trial version that actually works runs out.

They need to tweak their labeling

In order to save a file to your computer so you can access it later, when celtx is open, you need to go to File > Move To…, and your Finder will pop up so you can save it to reopen in the program later. I don’t know why there isn’t an alternative way around this, but from what I’ve found by poking around the app, it’s the only way to save… Hopefully this helps some people out!

One problem

Okay I like the software, but when I click on the scripts I have on the opening screen it says “file doesn’t exist”. I have to search for it and it keeps adding it on the screen like it was never there in the first place. Fix this when you have the chance please.

Not ready for prime time...

I read the reviews. They were pretty bad. And I went ahead and bought it anyway. Under the Format menu there there is a submenu Options. Here you set the strings to use when dialogue breaks, the scene is broken across a page, and dialogue is interrupted by action. I found it surprising that these fields weren’t already filled in with the industry standard defaults. I found it amazing that after filling in this dialog box, the settings were not preserved after I closed and reopened the document. Also amazing, you have to login every time you open the application. That is, even though I checked save info to my keychain, I have to type in username and password every time I want to connect to the cloud. These are rudimentary mistakes.

not that good

I used seltx in Windows before but that was better than this celtx for Mac is not good. actually bad.

ABSOLUTE GARBAGE

This is a terrible program. Makes me wish I was back in the “TAB” through Word days. Do not buy it. I’ve lost parts of three screenplays. Their cloud service is an absolute joke and the program crashes with regularity. DO NOT BUY IT.

It’s okay...

Its very simple (and the online and Linux versions are actually better). I wish I could say more. Needs another revision. I don’t hate it. But don’t love it either.

Issues with saving

Often crashes when you attempt to save. Other than that, its an okay program

Broken - Stay away!!!

I bought this app specifically for writing A/V scripts. I opened the app, created a new A/V script from the startup dialogue, entered a heading and hit return. The moment I started typing a description it crashed. It crashes every time I try to enter a description. Also, There apparently aren’t any columns which makes it useless for A/V script writing.

i just wated $20!

It needs a major update, perhaps running on a new engine

Useful but needs some basic features added

For the most part I find this app is functional and affordable for what you get. There are some little bugs or things that have been overlooked that would make it smoother and easier. For example, earlier scripts file that I want to delete, Celtx won’t allow me to delete them from the app or the cloud, so they just remain there. Sometimes when I specificy a format for a line the buttons or key commands just don’t work so I have to back up a few lines and try again. There should be a function to jumping to a later page in the script so you don’t have to scroll endlessly when you come back to work again. You can’t make a PDF of your script from the cloud. It screws up punctuation and has some other issues. From the app works better, but you don’t always have it in front of you.

Ima new writter

Im new to writing, and this app help me with the structure that comes with writing a script. Great app, never crashed for me!

good, simple interface, but buggy

I’ve written a few scripts on Celtx CS and have been frustated with how buggy it is. Trying to search for a word isn’t dependable - sometimes search works, sometimes it doesn’t. (Searching is a very basic funtion available in the simplest text editing platforms, but not always here) There are huge issues with pasting from one draft to another. Pasting often crashes the program. Hopefully the new version fixes some of these issues. With all of that said, the interface is clean and simple.

NEEDS FULL CELTX FEATURE SET

BRAND NEW USER… haven’t had any issues yet, but it need FULL CELTX feature set. please let us know how to UPGRADE for a MAC.

bugs

The application quites so often. I am stuck on a draft because anytime I try to edit it, the application quits. Very disappointing. A waste of time.

Almost perfect

As a screenwriter, I need to have my screenplays saved in a safely backup. It organizes online properly, you can also buy a version for computer, which is where I prefer to work. The online version has a tendency to open on a copy or the last draft you used. I mean, you don’t create a new draft every time you open your document. If only simple things like that could be solved, this software is definitely a must for screenwriters.
