“Open source” FACEPALM
This is MUCH better than the standard Celtx desktop I’ve used over the years, but still has major issues because of Celtx’s family of programs.
I like the concept of open source. I also have no problem paying a premium for top notch software.
Celtx has tried to be both, and it isn’t working out so well.
MOST IMPORTANTLY: The scripts generated in this are NOT compatible with other celtx software. It is extremely frustrating if you use more than one machine (let’s say, a computer at home, at the office, and roaving macbook). I teach screenwriting at a local University, and this issue (combined with how hard it is to get a PDF out of any Celtx software because they require logins and internet connections) makes getting my students scripts very hard. I would like to point out it didn’t used to be this way: Celtx was great! But it’s being dominated by a desire to make money and shove “pre-production tools” down our throats. I shouldnt have to jump hoops just to save my work or create a PDF.
All the cloud stuff and IOS compatibility SOUNDS great, but in reality, leads to lost drafts, which is entirely unacceptable. Working on something on my phone or iPad has lost major revisions. Sure, you can go to the site and track down the many versions you have, but that is FRUSTRATING, and gets between you and your writing. There is some great ideas here, but the lack of real world compatibilty accross “celtx” is making Final Draft look really good.
Where’s the simple program I loved to write with?
